The Process of the Contest [WIP]

Introduction

Warning: This article is not yet complete.

Every month we create either new games or continue in progress games in a contest cycle.

Dates

The start date of each cycle should be found by visiting #news and looking for a deadline announcement.

Once you discover the deadline, you can work backwards to understand where we're at in the current competition. The process of the contest counts in business days.

Just jumping in one of the Division channels and asking for help in understanding where we're at in the process is probably a much more efficient way to solve the problem of understanding what you need to do by what deadline.

Week 1 - Team Formation

[Day 1] Team & Goal Formation Meeting [Wednesday]

  • Everyone - Host shares vision of [P1], pairs new people on teams. Host checklist link.
  • Legions - Legions define their values, develop their org chart.
  • All Teams - Go through the next steps guide to set up their meeting time.
Note: Every day, the host goes over their own checklist with everybody and splits everyone up into Legions. The Legions go over their own checklist with their members and break up into teams which do the same.

[Day 2] Idea Brainstorm Meeting [Thursday]

  • Everyone - Host announces theme for cycle. Host actively pairs people without teams with teams and teams without Legions to Legions. Host mentions announcements, and splits people to their Legions. Link.
  • Legions - Legions define their rules.
  • All Teams - Develop a fresh goal statement for their teams, brainstorm a good cause to focus their game on and come up with a pitch for Day 3.
    • New Teams - Learn [P1] values, apply to join a Division, come up with a game pitch for Friday.
Note: Unlike a game jam, teams are required to put enormous thought into the direction of their games because they will be making them over the course of months or years to come.

[Day 3] Teams Pitch Ideas [Friday]

  • Everyone - Mentions announcements, and splits people to their Legions. Link. Accepts the practice pitches of those who don't have a Legion. Link.
  • Legions - Have all the teams pitch ideas to them (practice run). Decide if teams must pitch again on the weekend or Monday.
  • Teams - Continue refining their pitch based on the previous day's feedback. Learn about the Assets Discord.

Week 2 - Development Start

[Day 4] 50% of Pitches are Approved [Monday]

  • Everyone - Mentions announcements, and splits people to their Legions. Link. Accepts the final pitches of those who don't have a Legion. Link.
  • Legions - Have all their teams pitch. Require those who don't obtain the top 50% of votes to come back with improved pitches tomorrow.
  • Teams - Prepare their second pitch if they lost. If not, teams start working on their games. Teams update their registration post with their new goal and game ideas based on the previous day's work. New teams understand our helpfulness system and why we use voice channels and how to rename them. And all teams elect sub-leaders for their teams and learn about onboarding and introduction giving.
Note: The top 50% of teams that pitch to their Legion and get approval (votes) start working on their games one day early as a reward. The rest continue improving their pitch for the next day.
Note: Ambitious Legions may choose to host day 4 and day 5 on the weekend to get ahead, which is not required or even recommended.

[Day 5] Next 50% of Pitches Approved [Tuesday]

  • Everyone - Mentions announcements (upcoming Legion War), and splits people to their Legions. Link. Accepts the final pitches of those who don't have a Legion. Link.
  • Legions - Set up game tests for the course of the cycle. Have all their teams pitch.
  • New Teams - Learn about our vision, ranks, how to rank up, and how to invite friends.
  • Established Teams - Explain what they know about our vision and ranks.
  • All Teams - Elect a senator.
Note: For the Ignite Host, having every team on a Legion means they don't need to do any of the practice pitches.
[Day 6] [Wednesday] Chill Dev Day
  • Everyone - Mentions announcements (upcoming Legion War), and splits people to their Legions. Link
  • Legions - Legions begin to go through a daily process of assigning introduction givers, reviewing important dates, requesting anyone who is new contact them in order to join their team if they have availabilities and then splitting to their teams as quickly as possible.

Event Cycle Overview

Our organization operates on a 10-day work cycle where we meet every weekday to help each other succeed. Although [P1] runs these cycles essentially as a contest, the goal is to get as many people working on projects that will help them succeed as possible, and we're all trying to do that together.

  • [Day 1] Monday -- [P1] Team & Goal Formation Meeting
    • On this day, we share a little bit about our community. We then help everyone talk about their goals and organize into teams based on those goals. Finally, teams register for the competition.
  • [Day 2] Tuesday --
    •
  • [Day 3] Wednesday -- Voting on a Pitch
    • We vote to move forward with 50% of the pitches and send the other 50% back for re-pitching the next day.
  • [Day 4] Thursday -- Re-pitches & Recruiting
    • We work together to accept or deny the re-pitches. If we deny the pitches, members will have to go back and join other teams or break up.
Rest for Saturday/Sunday.
  • [Day 5] Friday -- Co-Mentorship
    • Here, we'll pair people based on their dedication to help each other build their portfolios and enter the industry.
  • [Day 6] Monday -- 1st Game Test Competition
    • We will test each others' games and one of the teams will win an award with extra points towards complete victory for being the best-tested game within the timeframe.
  • [Day 7] Tuesday -- Community Discussion
    • Here we will assist each other as different teams, asking and answering questions to create a space where people can help each other.
  • [Day 8] Wednesday -- Feedback
    • We'll test each other's games one last time before the final submission.
  • [Day 9] Friday -- Submission Link Reveal -- Deadline at Midnight
